How to Buy a Car Trailer for Cars and Trucks
With the upcoming 2012 MegaSpeed Custom Car and Truck Show in Toronto, we thought we'd put together a helpful list of things to consider prior to purchasing a car trailer to haul your vehicle. There are differences in the types and styles of trailer you will need based on the car or truck you are hauling and the vehicle you are using to pull the car trailer. Keep a pen and paper handy as you answer these questions.
1. First, what are you going to haul? If it is a race car, antique car, custom muscle car, will an open cargo trailer suffice; or, will you need an enclosed trailer with additional storage options?
2. What vehicle are you going to use to pull the car trailer? It's important to know the total weight of the vehicle that is being loaded, the weight of the trailer you're considering and the towing vehicle to ensure they will all work together. Otherwise, you'll risk unwanted damage.
3. What type of hitch will you need to pull the car trailer and what will you need to make sure you can get it stopped. Your dealer should be able to help you with the specs needed for the hitch. However, you will need to look into brakes and consider whether electric or hydraulic brakes are a better option.
4. How do you plan to load and unload the car or truck onto the trailer and will you be hauling more than one automobile?
5. Where will the trailer be stored when not it use? If you are storing it in a garage, barn, machine shed or shop, be sure that the trailer will clear the entrance doors. Moreover, some like to store the trailer on its side. Is that possible in the space you're considering?
6. If you are considering an enclosed hauler, think about what you want the interior to be like. Will you need additional storage for extra supplies, accessories and gear?
7. Consider the floor type. Though some wood floors resist and reply water, oil and other liquids that may drip onto the surface, you may need to install a floor covering. An aluminum floor can be washed and maintained easily, but can be hazardous when wet.
8. Should you buy an existing car trailer or should you consider a custom build? Most dealerships work with trailer manufacturers that have been in the industry a very long time. Consider speaking with your sales person about custom options and research manufacturers to find one that is a good fit for your specific needs.
9. Can the exterior of your trailer act as a billboard for your business, racing team or organization? If so, learn more about how a custom paint job can give your exterior an eye-catching flair.
10. Speak with a trusted dealer. Look for someone who is an expert and has been in the industry for some time. They are more likely to really answer your questions and help you choose the best options for hauling your car or truck.
Buying a car trailer is a big decision and we wish you the best of luck in your buying process.
